Whatever
Can we put to bed the meme that Sarah Palin wasn't vetted?
The claim that Palin wasn't vetted, or that she's only just being vetted now, is false. Wholly and patently false. The lesser claim that she was inadequately vetted rests, I must assume, on a false premise: the idea that McCain wouldn't have picked her if he had known that [insert preferred "revelation" that was "unearthed" over the last 72 hours], ergo he must not have fully vetted her. It just doesn't seem to occur to those pushing this trope that the "revelations" they find so concerning might be matters of near-supreme indifference to McCain and to his primary audience: non-liberals.
My suspicion is that the meme arises from the fact that those pushing it - both bloggers and the MSM - really thought this pick was a bolt from the blue. That was the narrative the media sought to push all weekend - this was a "surprise" pick that "came out of nowhere." That narrative - assuming its ingenuousness - reveals total ignorance of what's been happening in conservative circles, where Palin's name has been circulating for months. My first post about her was on June 2d, and frankly, I was late to the bandwagon. The only thing that surprised conservatives was that McCain actually picked her; she was the preferred choice of many conservatives weeks - months, even - before McCain named her. Moreover, not only do we know that she was vetted, the idea that she wasn't is ludicrous - it just doesn't pass the laugh test. Like the meme that Palin said that she didn't know what the veep does, it begs the question of whether the person advancing the claim is serious - is it really likely that McCain picked his veep on a whim, facing as he did an extremely tough election against an opponent who has a funding advantage and a media that is determined to win it for the left? The claim that McCain made the most important decision of his campaign on a whim is like claiming that Obama decided to wing his acceptance speech, billed as the most important speech of his campaign, preferring to speak off the cuff. The claim is so totally counterintuitive that it demands some real evidence.
Moreover, as I said yesterday, I would really like to see someone provide a coherent explanation of how a pick that has united and energized the GOP while driving the left into counterproductive apoplexy is a misstep by McCain.
Added: more details about the vetting process.
Other Palin memes debunked: Sarah said she didn't know what the veep does | Sarah was picked because she's a she | Choosing Sarah was a mistake | Abstinence-only education failed Bristol Palin | McCain's pick "came out of nowhere"
Can do, Simon!

Can do, Simon! It's a "misstep" because he's failing to follow the generic opposition-candidate script that the left wrote for him, and is flubbing his lines by not being an utter bumbling incompetent, falling over his own feet on cue from Stage Left.
Sweet mother of pearl, can't the man take stage directions? :-)
agreed 100%
Right. The left wants it so badly to be a mis-step that they are insisting that everyone MUST interpret this as a calculated move to attract disenchanted Hillary supporters and nothing more.
The saddest part is that it shows so obviously how many folks wanted to evaluate the choice of Palin without in fact evaluating Palin herself. BTW, a female acquaintance of mine LEPT to this. Clearly she was ticked off that the GOP nominated a woman. And while that's not right or fair, don't underestimate the ability of such a viewpoint to endure. [After all, many of Hillary's supporters wanted Hillary herself, not a gun-toting, pro-life beauty queen surrogate. None of those things ought to count against Palin, put among up-for-grabs Hillaryites, some of them will.)
In a passing-far world, this all collapses to the extent that Palin shows herself to be capable and of substance. I think that's what's going to happen. Currently, what we have now in the way of initial reactions is mostly spin. That should and I think will get supplanted by the reactions of real-everyday folks to whatever persona Palin is able to craft in the coming weeks and months.
She does seem a little bit squeaky, which hinders the formation of a gravitas vibe. But I think the suggestion that she's a garden variety token not-ready-for-prime-time player is sinking quite rapidly. It's up to her to fill in the blanks. The fact that she has managed to raise 5 kids (as a woman, not a quasi-absentee dad), get elected governor, and has battled the old political guard on cronyism speaks volumes to me. She has my ear.

When your opposition has
When your opposition has spent two years pushing himself as the outsider agent of Change® and then picks an eternal insider as his running mate, it's tough to switch tracks. Too much cognitive dissonance.
And now that Obama is having to start coloring in the details of what he actually means by Change®, the Obama/outsider cachet will fade fast as it becomes more and more obvious that Change® is simply the same old promise-everything-to-everybody socialist/populist eat-the-rich rhetoric.
It won't be long now before GOP ops will be noisily pointing out to anyone who will listen that the Dem ticket is composed of two lawyers who have made their entire careers out of being political insiders, thus further undercutting the Change® meme. You can almost feel it coming. Frankly, to a great extent McCain just pre-empted Obama's meme.
Also expect to see lots and lots about the sorry state of Obama's Illinois Senate district, and the Daley-machine politics-as-usual there.
Wait, so now the political
Wait, so now the political strategy is that Obama is an insider? I thought he barely had any experience (a few years as an Il senator and some time as a US Senator). Or is just sort of working as a community activist now make one an insider? Seriously, I'm confused.
Yes, we noticed
Seriously, I'm confused.
Yes, we noticed. :-)
One need not have any real ability to be a party hack in a corrupt organization, nor to dance when the strings are pulled, yet that's still an insider thing.
I know that's what you're
I know that's what you're getting at: It's one thing to make an assertion that someone is a puppet hack, it's another to come up with any evidence. If it's out there, I'm sure the McCain campaign will dig it up, but your accusation seems pretty baseless, no?
And I love the "damned if you do, damned if you don't argument". Obama picks someone with a lot of experience in DC, and it's "insiderism"; I can only imagine the argument that would have been made if he picked an outsider who no one has heard of.
I vote for misstep (the good
I vote for misstep (the good thing about this debate is we'll have a pretty good answer come November).
First, whether she was vetted or not is irrelevant; you can find stories from both side on the issue--the point is the McCain campaign seems unsure and caught off-guard over the pick (eg, the news that now McCain is sending a team to Alaska), the pathetic trumping of her national security bona-fides etc. (see, eg, for an embarrassing example that's been floating around). She may be a great VP, and McCain/Palin may be better executives in the end than Obama/Biden, but the handling of this is incredibly bad by the McCain campaign.
Second, she certainly was a surprise pick to the media, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, except that now all the media scrutiny, rumors etc. come out after the pick is made, as opposed to three months ago. She has never been under any intense national media scrutiny before, and for better or worse, a media misstep over the next few months that doesn't have time to leave the news cycle by the election can be deadly (for example, everyone knows that Biden is a blowhard, plagarized, etc., abut if this came out for the first time in late September, it would be very bad for Obama's chances). Again, if McCain wins, especially if by more than a few % points, it was a brilliant move, but only time will really tell.
Third, the lack of experience argument was a good one to use against Obama (I'm an Obama supporter and it's my biggest reservation). Obama picking Biden and McCain picking Palin basically neutralizes that argument entirely--ie, how important can experience really be to the McCain campaign?
fourth, the narrative is out there that this was an impulsive, gambler's, kind of pick (see, eg, Bill Kristol). If Palin turns out to be a dud of a pick, I could very easily see the McCain narrative turning into "McCain is another Bush who thinks with gut instead of his head". Again, if Palin is a quick learner and charms everyone, well, people love a winning gamble. It's just that, it I were a McCain supporter who knew nothing about Palin, I'd be very worried.
As a supporter of McCain
As a supporter of McCain I would say Sarah Palin has energized both bases. That will lead to unexpected results. I'm not sure McCain wanted or expected that. So far the media is coming out looking the worst in this and the blogosphere has been horrible.
I like Gov Palin as someone who is willing to pull the Alaskan Republican party away from "sleaziness" and my hunch is that's what grabbed McCain. Having said that, my biggest concern is that John McCain is the candidate and he needs to get the focus back on him.
