Fresh back from the Yellow Brick Road tour, wherein the Faithful gathered to hear Obama stump and Sebelius endorse. My notepad was trampled, left behind in the crush, and my camera did its very best to be uncooperative, with foggy lens and short-lived battery. Maybe standing outside in a howling blizzard for an hour first had something to do with it. Haven't checked the cell-phone pics yet. May be some good crowd shots on it, or press gaggle.
The short report: Obama will give you everything you ever want or need. And a pony! Unless you're rich or Bush, then we're going to eat you because you're evil.
But he had no suggestions as to how to actually pay for giving everybody everything they want. Other than eating the rich. And Bush. (News flash from reality--there aren't nearly enough rich to go around, nor, despite their fecundity, enough Bushes.) At a ballpark guess, tripling the discretionary federal budget would be insufficient to fulfill the promises made. But he shore do talk purty.
The Reader's Digest version of the speech: America needs to come together. Our bitter divisions are everyone else's fault. Especially Bush and the rich. We'll eat them, Obama will wave his magic Hope-Change™ leadership unity wand as we dance around the bloody bonepiles singing Kumbayah, and then we can all have everything we want and live happily ever after.
My invite turned out to be worthless for admission, as they devolved to first come, first served due to crowd size and attempting to crowd the gates to get VIP'd in would have been courting mob action. Fortunately I was there two hours early, which barely got me inside. Call that special "reserved seating" invite a typical liberal promise--worth exactly the paper it was printed on, if only you could scrub the ink out. OK, once I actually got inside it did get me past the guards to a floor seat in the midst of some county-level pols, but with an obstructed view. So I spent an hour networking and lobbying the Dem pols I knew, then surrendered my seat to a young woman with an infant and a True Believer shine to her eyes, and retreated to the balcony for a better view--and a quicker exit.
More later maybe, when I recover.
MORE: My favorite pander was the announcement that seniors earning less than $50K/yr shouldn't have to pay taxes. Gee, isn't $50K/yr plus monthly SS checks enough to place a single person in pretty good shape? What with the heavily subsidized health insurance and all? Does "pay no taxes" mean no SS/Medicare payroll taxes as well? More pony, with cowbell!!!
MORE: To give him his due, I can see how Obama has come far. He's a charismatic speaker with good delivery and excellent pacing. He gets his negative shots out of the way up front quickly, and then spends the rest of his time on building up the warm fuzzies. And he builds very well, lifting the emotion gradually to a crescendo, then going into a short but easy cool-down and then shutting up before he's ridden you into yawning tedium. Good showmanship.
MORE: Lost with my notepad was a listing of all the lead-in music and the timing. The original "plan" was for doors to open at 11:45am, with Obama slated to speak at 12:40. Both the morning news and a text message from one of the organizers clued me that their attempts to keep it sane with invites for floor and RSVP by request for all admission had broken down under load, and it would be first come, first served for admission. Those with RSVP's in hand could still get floor seating, and those with invites could still get into their reserved sections, IF they could get in past the fire marshall. Once capacity was reached, all others would be shuffled off to an overflow facility with video linkage.
So I arrived at 9:45, driving to the campus past Walnut River Tattoos and Young Welders Supply (where do old welders get supplied?), managed a parking space on campus, and got in a line that was at least six or seven hundred people long. It was snowing and the wind was gusting up to 45-50 mph, with wind chill ranging down into subzero. Not being total idiots (Headline: "OBAMA VISITS KANSAS--HUNDREDS DIE OF EXPOSURE!") they opened the doors almost immediately and let people in until the lobby was filled, then started packing them into the balconies. Once the first balcony was filled they opened the doors again. I got in the door about 10:45. Once I was in the building I found a friend there with a local group and had her save me a spot in the balcony, then spotted an acquaintance with the door crew and got passed through to the floor, where I muddled about for an hour networking. About 11:45 (the time the doors were originally supposed to open) I gave up my floor seat to a young mother with a toddler and went up to the balcony.
At 12:20 an advance man named Bobby Schmuck (no, really) came up and gave a very short speech, and then the lead-in music started. First cut was "Celebration". About every fourth tune deviated from uplifting urban pop into uplifting country pop. At 1:00 the music began to loop back to "Celebration" and a local party activist came out to give the intro. She told us how her son was a 20-year military vet being treated for PTSD and had been homeless after getting back from the gulf and it was all Evil Bush's fault that her 18-yr-old grandson was worried about his daddy. It was a tale that roused the crowd, and raised some mathematical questions in my mind, as from my vantage she appeared to be fiftyish. Whatever. It was somewhat apparent to me that Sebelius was running late and thus couldn't give the endorsement/intro, so this lady got subbed in as the natives were getting restless.
Obama came out at 1:05 and delivered his 37 minute speech. Substance (or lack thereof) reported above, and heavily edited excerpts of his speech and Sebelius' endorsement speech can be found here. I could compare it to the speeches already available on Obama TV, but seriously, if you expect me to sit through those for a line-by-line you're nuts. He wrapped his speech to another standing ovation and started working the front lines (gee, I missed my handshake/camera appearance opportunity by leaving the floor) while the brighter crowd members made for the exits. I made it to my car and managed to get out ahead of the crush. Several people tried to ram my vehicle while driving like idiots, and the lack of intelligence displayed among the drivers fleeing the location was such that I stopped at the local bookstore/coffee hut for a breather before getting onto the highway.
I'm intentionally leaving out some details regarding security and little things such as how I knew when Elvis Obama was in the building. Let's just say security was unobtrusive but very present and professional.
Was Sebelius as Stepford as
Was Sebelius as Stepford as her rebuttal speech? I got the feeling she had emerged from a pod just before the speech last night. I'm not sure I can assume you're still Tully and that the shine hasn't gotten in your eye too. Did you wear polarized sunglasses? I guess we'll have to read your posts and see what ponies emerge.
At least you didn't have to suffer through an hour of PopeOprah (as Colbert calls her). Wasn't there any call to put a man on Mars? Make any sacrifice to defend freedom and liberty? Ask what we can do for our country and not how much more our country can do for us? Did Obama call any country an evil empire or did Lincoln come up? Did you buy a subscription to McCafferty Digest without noticing until after you had left?
Did you notice a small booth behind the podium with a curtain on it and the sound of levers being pulled?
Okay, I know, quite snide of me, but frankly with the handicap being shoveled out these days by pundits, press and pollsters, Hawkings could beat Tiger Woods (did he endorse Obama yet)....LOL.
Let's see if Hillary can over come and lead us from our oppression to the promised land ordained so my eyes can see the glory from the glorious mountain top as we build a bridge together to the place where dreams become an everlasting cornacopia from want lit by our brilliant imagination and aspirations with self-evident splendor of peace, liberated wisdom and perfect grace.
Amen. I believe therefore I can see.
And that car comes with a 30 day warranty or 5 added miles on the odometer, which ever comes first.
Did you wear polarized
Did you wear polarized sunglasses?
Yes. They shield you from the deneuralizer flashes. 8^)

In order, no, no, here's what your country will do for you if you vote for me, screw other countries, one utterly snarky (and IMHO dishonestly used) Lincoln quote, and I resolutely refused to sign anything or accept any literature. One really cute gal slapped me on the butt and winked at me when I turned around. A few minutes later another one did the same thing fom the other side. I smiled back and moved on before peeling the Obama stickers off my butt as inconspicuously as possible. (I suspect a local Dem/Obama organizer of my acquaintance--the same one who gave me the invite--put them up to it.)
Sebelius? Don't get me started.
Great update Tully
And just a note to Simon, Here's some more wisdom from Brooks.
First MLK and now JFK, or was that Teddy?
Glad to see you survived Tully and you're not a Stepford dad.
I see no JFK quotes....
I happened upon this today, but I'm sure you saw it too. For those who haven't, here is an article about the Obama/JFK comparison. I think it touches about the intuition bit.
I see that Edwards doesn't seem likely to endorse anyone right away, but the Union is strongly pushing for Clinton here in NY. I think Edwards did have some blue collar backing that may very well drift towards Hillary and obviously some other supporters who will drift towards Obama.
As for the snub at the SOTU people talk about, Obama said it was an "accident" but more than Clinton supporters think not. In any case, Sun-Times states that their tally shows more donations made by Rezko cronies than Obama has given back. His latest cash to charity transfer happened yesterday, long after the dirt on Rezko came out. The trial will begin shortly and I wonder if anyone here thinks Obama might be supeneaed as part of it, or if in their professional opinion there is anything more than inuendo. I know on such matters, folks here don't like to speculate.
So you had fun, then?
I'm waiting for the rest.

What, Raf, no humor...
Or any reaction to Florida. I know it doesn't count.
Strange how this primary is becoming not just electing a leader, but a referendum on reaching out, the role of media, the power of bases and the ability of mavericks and centrists to free themselves from the shackles of political slavery and break down the doors of political segregation. Isn't that what we glorify here? Kudos Florida, no chads tonight.
Seriously that is.....
Well, Giuliani is done, and will endorse McCain. Sorry, Fern : )
I'm wondering what the backlash will be against Clinton for campaigning there, as I heard she was getting heat for campaigning in Florida.
Oh, in case you missed it, Rudy is out and will endorse McCain. Apparently, his big gamble fell through.
"In the world you will find tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world."
John 16:33
Make no mistake, Florida
Make no mistake, Florida counts, OK, only half-delegates for McCain, but half is better than none, and on the Dem side it provdes endless politickin' fodder for grandstanding.
As a Floridian, the impact
As a Floridian, the impact of the Crist endorsement in the exit polls was an absolute shock to me. Plus Crist managed to pull the amendment out that I thought (and hoped) was doomed. It would not surprise me if Crist just locked up the Veep spot under McCain if McCain wins the nomination. Seems like Crist could pull Florida for the GOP in November. I very erroneously discounted the Crist endorsement.
like spontaneous combustion
To me, data suggesting that an endorsement had an actual positive effect on voters is like documentary evidence of spontaneous combustion or personally witnessing the landing of a UFO. I'm dumbfounded.
So did you folks vote yourself a "screw the new folks" break on real estate taxes?

Sure did, Crist pushed it
Sure did, Crist pushed it very hard. I have pretty much given up on trying to understand the thought process of the voters from I-4 south in this state. Although, it seemed to be retiree driven, so no big surprise there.
I pretty much always have
I pretty much always have fun at political events, Rafique. I love people-watching. If the cute girls would wear a little less, it'd be darn near perfect. :-)
From the exit and trip back, I do have one observation. FWIW, and for whatever reason, Obama supporters seem to be the world's stupidest drivers.
You'd be a bad driver too...
If you were also afflicted with Obama Fever!! The heart palpitations alone could do you in...not to mention the risk you run of getting "the vapors." And of course, after such close contact with heaven on two feet, you will need to text your friends about how "dreamy" he was. "Have the baby take the wheel!!"
And thats just the reaction of the MSM.
I think it's a variant of
I think it's a variant of myopic tunnel vision....
great update
Great on-the-ground reporting, Tully. But I'm easy- you have me at pony every time.
Hurl :P

THIS is why I'm writing in Lieberman this year. I'm sick of false promises from candidates. We are going through some major structural changes globally. America is still powerful, but other countries want to play too. There is no guarantee that if you get rid of Republicans life would be perfect.
Can Obama promise to maintain automobile jobs? How can he maintain small businesses which provide most jobs in this country? How can he or Hillary provide decent government based health care without taking 30%+ of the government budget (ie our tax money)? How can they make peace in the Middle East? No one else has a great record, how would they be different? How can they raise the worth of the dollar yet intice foreign businesses to stay here?

Obama is Elvis & Princess Di
You didn't need to qualify Obama's assets in the "More" section above, Tull. No one doubts this guy's charisma. He's the real deal- celebrities and politicos would kill for half of his magic. It's impossible to replicate- you've either got it or you don't. It's Dick Nixon staring at JFK in the debates, thinking "I wish I could be him." Further, Barack's cool. His manner is moderate- even if his politics aren't. Most of us are emotionally intuitive when it comes to politicians, so this distinction is easily missed or glossed over. Reagan fell into the same category- and eventually sold himself as acceptable to the majority.

Something I didn't know: zealots are lousy drivers. Makes sense, I guess. But so are absent-minded college profs. Who are probably liberal. Am I to conclude that liberals are bad drivers? I'm confused.
I dunno, kreiz. All I know
I dunno, kreiz. All I know is that I've been to a lot of high-traffic events both around here and in major cities all around the nation, and that leaving this one was downright scary because so many of the drivers believed they actually DID own the road. I saw one gal trying to cut off a school bus in motion. ON ICE. I was glad I got moving early, so I could exercise the option to go into El Dorado and poke around rather than joining the crush headed west. I'll bet most of the folks heading back to Wichita even took the turnpike, when the 254 route is not only free but a real decent divided 70mph 4-lane, and the shortest direct route to the 96/135/235 loop and almost anywhere on the north or west side. But that's another rant...
A rant that only a few can
A rant that only a few can appreciate. A 4-lane 254 is a godsend. Plus no speedtrap in Benton. :)
Thanks!
Thanks for making the sacrifices so we don't have to ;-).
Obama made an appearance in Austin long ago, but we were having much more fun in Mexico that day. OK, *I* was having fun - the Profesora was pregnant and probably wishing she was throwing up.
Are you SURE we can't pay for govt forever just by eating Bushes? AWWW... ;-)
Rachel grumbled:
Can Obama promise to maintain automobile jobs?
Get it straight - that's ROMNEY's schtick. Nor has Obama promised Middle East peace. Just American Congressional peace, which, well, we see how the same promise worked for "a uniter, not a divider."
It's easy to promise.
It's easy to promise. Delivering is a bit tougher.
